What Are Whey Protein Supplements And What Can They Do For You?


Whey protein supplements are fast becoming the most popular health supplements on the market. While traditionally associated with bodybuilders and athletes who use whey protein to build muscle, the nutrient’s other health benefits are slowly becoming widely known. Whey protein is a form of protein derived from whey, a liquid byproduct of cheese production. It is easier to digest and be absorbed by the body than other forms of protein and is rich in other nutrients as well. Because of this, many researchers are currently conducting studies on the possibilities of using whey protein as a way of cutting disease risk as well as a possible supplementary treatment for a number of health conditions. And whey proteins are generally safe, even for those with milk allergies since they don’t contain caseins, the substance that is behind most of these allergies.

Whey protein is essential for bodybuilders because they have to take two times the recommended daily allowance of protein or one gram of protein for every pound of body weight. Whey protein provides the protein they need while giving them the right combination of amino acids to enhance physical performance. Glutathione is an anti-oxidant that is naturally found in the body but whose levels can be reduced by strenuous exercise and other factors. Whey protein has also been linked with helping manage other diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

There are three main types of whey protein supplements available:

  1. Whey protein isolates are the most expensive type of whey protein because they are the purest form of the substance, with almost no fat, carbohydrates or lactose as well as the least amount of calories. Hence, they are ideal for both weight lifters and those who want to lose fat.
  2. Whey protein concentrate provides less protein per serving than isolates, but is more affordable. They are ideal for general use, since the amount of protein per scoop is still high, with the difference only being around 2g to 5g compared with a scoop of whey protein isolates. On the other hand, they may also be slightly higher in calories.
  3. Whey protein blends are the most affordable form of whey protein supplements as they are a blend of isolates and concentrate. They may also have less carbohydrates, fats and lactose compared with whey protein concentrate. If you are buying this type of whey protein, however, make sure to read the label carefully to ensure that the product you are buying contains more isolates than concentrate and provides the best value for your money.
