How To Choose Whey Protein Bodybuilding Supplements

Whey protein bodybuilding supplements are extremely popular among athletes because of their wide range of benefits. Whey protein is a substance that is created as a by-product of cheese production and is a rich source of nutrients, including the essential amino acids required for peak athletic performance.  For example, whey protein is a rich source of BCAAs or branched chain amino acids, which are metabolized directly into muscle tissue and help replenish protein depleted during intense workouts so that the body can start rebuilding lean muscle tissue. Whey protein is also rich in leutine, an amino acid that helps promote muscle growth.

In addition, whey protein has also been linked with a host of other health and wellness benefits.  For example, if you are trying to manage your weight, taking whey protein can help you by slowing the absorption of glucose into the blood, helping reduce hunger pangs while making it easier for the body to burn fat. Its glucose-controlling properties also help type-2 diabetics who take whey protein regularly manage the disease. And whey protein is rich in anti-oxidants such as glutathione, helping reduce the risk of cancer as well as ensuring healthier aging. This form of protein is also more digestible than other forms of protein, making it easier to absorb by the body as well as having a high biological value; thus, it is ideal for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, since it provides them with a nutrient-rich food that they can consume easily, even when they’re feeling nauseous. And since whey protein no longer contains casein, it can be safely taken by those who have milk allergies.

Here is a brief guide to some of the varoius types whey protein bodybuilding supplements currently being sold on the market:

  1. Isolates are the purest form of whey protein supplement powders available, and contain as much as 90% to 96% protein, while having virtually 0% fat and minimal lactose. They are processed under low temperature and low acid conditions to ensure that the whey protein remains undenatured and biologically active.
  2. Concentrates are a more affordable alternative to whey protein bodybuilding isolate supplements, and contain 70% to 80% protein with reduced amounts of fat and lactose. They also have beneficial compounds not found in isolates such as growth factors including TGF-1 and IGF-1, as well as higher higher levels of bioactive lipids and various phospholipids.
  3. Ion exchange whey protein supplements are processed using a method that results in a supplement that has the highest levels of proteim among isolate products. However, many experts have criticized these products since they claim the processing depletes many vital health-promoting components.
  4. Micro-filtered isolates use more advanced methods of processing whey protein to produce supplements that not only have high levels of protein but also retain many of the vital components that are lost using other processing methods. Look for terms such as Cross Flow Micro Filtration, reverse osmosis, ultra filtration and micro filtration. Whey protein bodybuilding supplements produced using the CFM process in particular have higher amounts of calcium and lower amounts of sodium.
